Start with a traceable production batch
Give each batch a unique identifier. Record the production unit, feedstock source, mass and moisture, operating times, process observations and weighed biochar output. Keep units and measurement bases explicit. A dry-basis carbon calculation cannot use an unexplained wet output weight.
Connect laboratory sample identifiers to the relevant batch. A carbon-content result without that connection cannot establish which material it describes. Retain the original measurement record alongside the value entered into a dashboard.
Reconcile bags and stock
Give bags or other inventory units identifiers that link back to production. Record quantities and masses when material enters storage, leaves for delivery or is written off. Compare the amount produced with the stock and movement records.
A reconciliation can identify a missing or duplicated movement. It cannot prove that a photo is authentic, a scale is calibrated or a delivery occurred. Those questions require supporting evidence and review.
Connect delivery to application
Record the recipient, destination, date and quantity when the material leaves stock. Keep delivery and application as separate events when they happen at different times. Link the final use or storage record to the batch and inventory units that supplied it.
Original images, timestamps, location evidence and recipient records can support that chain. Collect location and contact data with appropriate permission. Public demonstrations should avoid exposing private operational or personal records.
Review evidence and emissions separately
Inventory totals, laboratory results, process evidence and application records answer different questions. Keep their review states separate. A balanced inventory does not establish durable storage or complete the emissions calculation.
For net-removal accounting, activity records must also support the emissions deductions. The ENVIID carbon calculator illustrates the distinction between fixed planning assumptions and a detailed scenario with activity data and factor sources.
What the ENVIID example demonstrates
The ENVIID digital MRV demonstrator lets you follow illustrative production, bag inventory, application and evidence-review records. It shows how the records relate and how missing information affects the review. It is a sample workflow, not a connected operational registry.
A digital record is not a carbon certificate. Independent verification and the applicable methodology determine whether removal is eligible for issuance. See Isometric’s Biochar Production and Storage protocol for a public methodology reference. For the underlying mass calculation, read the worked biochar carbon-removal example.
